Blaupunkt Frankfurt Stereo MB Rated “Absolute Top Class” by CAR&HiFi Magazine

The Blaupunkt Frankfurt Stereo MB — the newest model in Blaupunkt's hugely popular retro car radio range — has been put through its paces by CAR&HiFi magazine and come away with their highest praise.

In their January 2026 issue, the magazine's testers described it as an outstanding car radio that seamlessly integrates modern technology into classic vehicles while preserving their original style. Their verdict? A first choice for historic vehicles, and a product for which they're not aware of any comparable alternative on the market.

1970s Looks, 2026 Technology!

The Frankfurt Stereo MB is designed to look exactly right in a classic car cockpit. It features the pinstripe front panel, chrome frame, rotary knobs and push buttons that were typical of Blaupunkt radios in the 1970s — right down to the five preset buttons labelled L, M, K, U, U (the original German waveband abbreviations).

What makes it particularly clever is the installation flexibility. The unit ships with everything needed for three different fitting options: in a standard DIN slot with the included mounting frame, in a smaller period radio slot without the frame, or as an axle-mount device using the original dashboard cutout style common in cars from the late 1960s through to the 1980s. That covers an enormous range of classic and youngtimer vehicles.

The 3-inch colour TFT display can switch between a modern digital readout and a retro analogue frequency scale that's a dead ringer for the original 1970s look — a neat touch that lets owners choose how far they want to lean into the period aesthetic.

Serious Audio Under the Retro Exterior

Behind the vintage face sits thoroughly modern hardware. The Blaupunkt Codem IV high-end tuner handles FM, AM and DAB+ with Seamless Blending for uninterrupted reception when switching between digital and analogue signals.

Bluetooth Twin Connect allows two devices to be paired simultaneously, with full audio streaming, hands-free calling via the included external microphone, phone book access, and compatibility with Siri and Google voice assistants. Rear-mounted USB-A and USB-C ports handle media playback across a wide range of formats including MP3, FLAC, WAV and AAC.

On the audio side, the Frankfurt Stereo MB punches well above what you'd expect from a period-correct-looking unit. There's a dual 14-band graphic equaliser, variable high-pass and low-pass filters for front and rear channels, dynamic loudness management, and sound presets for rock, pop and classical. Output is 4×50 watts (or 4×75 watts into 2-ohm speakers), with four preamp outputs and a dedicated sub-out — more than enough to drive a proper hi-fi system in a classic car without touching the dashboard appearance.
